If you’ve found us then in all likelihood you already have an interest in cyclo-cross. Whether you’re a seasoned racer or new to cyclo-cross, the chances are we’ve got an event listed here that will satisfy your racing appetite. Once one of the lesser-known cycling disciplines, cyclo-cross is now one of the fasted growing sports in the country. It’s our goal to become the go-to web resource for cyclo-cross events in the UK by providing the most comprehensive list available anywhere online.
For the uninitiated cyclo-cross racing is fast and furious. It’s fun for all ages and easily accessible. The format sits between off-road cycling and mountain biking with races lasting between 30 minutes and one hour. Cyclo-cross is very family friendly and renowned for having an informal atmosphere with events catering for men and women, boys and girls, with a range of age categories from under 12 and youth races, to junior, senior, and veterans races.
A cyclo-cross course is typically a mile or so long, includes a variety of surfaces such as grass, mud, sand, gravel and tarmac, and often loops around with tight twisting turns. It will also feature at least one section where you’ll need to dismount and carry your bike and expect some short sharp hills. While there are lots of summer events, predominantly cyclo-cross is an autumn and winter sport, so be prepared for cold, wet, and muddy conditions.
If you’re not a member of a cycling club and want to go racing then the best way to get involved is to find a local event or join your local league. Most cyclo-cross leagues hold events every other weekend during September to February with many having online entry, or you can just enter on the day. Entrance fees are around £10 and there’s usually a surcharge if you don’t have British Cycling membership. And don’t worry if you don’t have a ‘cross bike, mountain bikes are welcome at most events.
So what are you waiting for? Find your local league, enter an event, and go ride it. It doesn’t matter if you’re a complete novice or an elite rider, your local cyclo-cross league has something to offer everyone.
